Playing (登場 Tōjō?) is an action you can perform during your main phase or by card effects.
How to Play[]
Playing is an action you do in the following order.
- Choose a Digimon or Tamer card in your hand that you wish to play and place it in the Battle Area.
- If its play cost would put the memory over 10 on the opponent's side you cannot choose that Digimon or Tamer.
- Effects that specify "when you would play" are triggered and activated at this time.
- In Japanese it will be "when playing", some English cards used a literal translations instead of the Detailed Rulebook Standardisation.
- These effects would have to be Interruptive Effects to trigger and activate at this time.
- If the Digimon has [DigiXros], you can perform [DigiXros].
- Pay the memory cost listed in its Play Cost.
- Any effects that would be triggered from the above 3 steps are triggered at the same time, including [On Play].
[BT3-030 Leopardmon] is an example of a Digimon that can be played for a memory cost of 12.
[BT1-085 Tai Kamiya] is an example of a Tamer that can be played for a memory cost of 4.
Important Notes[]
Digimon instances that were played cannot attack in the same turn unless they have <Rush>.
Hatching is not considered playing a card. Digivolving is not considered playing a card. If you digivolve on top of a Digimon that was played this turn it cannot attack. In order to see digivolving's interactions with <Rush> go to the page on <Rush>.
Effects such as <Blitz> and [BT4-090 Chaosmon] do not allow you to attack on the turn a Digimon is played. As shown in their FAQs.
Rulings[]
-
Q: If I digivolve a Digimon the same turn it entered play, can I attack with itA: No. Even if you digivolve it, you can't attack with a Digimon the same turn it entered play.
-
Q: I play a Digimon with an [On Play] effect, and paying the play cost results in the memory counter moving to 1 on my opponent's side. Does my Digimon's [On Play] effect activate?A: Yes, it does. After resolving the effect on the card you paid for, or resolving effects resulting from that card, it becomes your opponent's turn.
-
Q: If a card has a play cost of 11 or more, can I use it if my memory gauge is at zero?A: No. From zero, you will only be able to move your memory counter to 10 on your opponent's side, but you need to move it to 11 so that Digimon cannot be played.
-
Q: Do effects with [On Play] have to resolve at the timing specified? For example, if I have an effect with [On Play], am I required to activate it when the Digimon is played?A: Yes, whenever possible. However, if the effect has "can" in its text, you can choose whether or not to activate it. Effects that read "you may" (or "do <X> to do <Y>") are optional, and can be chosen not to be activated. You cannot choose to use the effect at a later time if you choose not to use the effect.
Other Rulings[]
-
Q: Can Digimon played by a card's effect attack the turn they were played?A: No, since it would count as the turn they were played.1
-
Q: If one of my Digimon has an effect applied to it that lasts a turn, then I use the effect of a card to from that Digimon's digivolution cards as a new Digimon, does that Digimon come into play with the same effect applied to it?A: No. Since it is played as another Digimon, it is not affected by any effects of the original Digimon it was under.1
-
Q: I am at 0 memory, I have a card that would normally cost 11 or more memory. However, it has a condition that reduces its play cost to below 10 memory. If the condition is fulfilled, can I play this card?A: Yes, its play cost has been reduced so you can play this card.2
